Cooking Product Buying Tips

When replacing a range, most people will choose a model that is the same size as their current range and uses the same power source (either gas or electric). This simplifies delivery and installation. GE offers a large selection of freestanding gas and electric ranges.

Electric Cooking Products

1. Is size important?

To replace your current range, measure the space available for your new range. This is critical when replacing built-in cooking products, especially if you are trying to avoid replacing cabinets or countertops. Most freestanding ranges sold over the last 20 years are 30 inches wide. You should easily find a new range to fit that opening.
2. What do I need to know about the electric range top?

Coil Top Ranges:
The coil elements plug in so they are easily removed when cleaning the cooktop. The drip pans lift out for easy cleaning, and the cooktop lifts to allow cleaning underneath the cooking area.

Smoothtop Ranges:
Most range buyers agree that smoothtop ranges look better and are easier to clean. The durable ceramic-glass cooktop is sealed to the range top so spills cannot drip down under the cooktop. Today more than 50% of ranges sold at retail are smoothtop.

3. Which oven is best for me?
The next decision is the type of oven: standard thermal or a convection oven. GE's True European style convection oven offers many cooking benefits. In addition to the standard bake and broil elements in the oven, there is a third heating element around the fan in the rear of the oven. With convection baking you will delight in the way your baked goods maintain their delicate texture while turning a delicious golden brown. Convection roasting will cook your meats up to 25% faster and will result in meats that are beautifully brown on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. Convection ovens allow you to choose between conventional or convection baking, and conventional or convection roasting.

GE offers many gas and electric models with self-cleaning ovens. Just set the controls and the oven will clean itself for only a few cents per cleaning.

2. What do I need to know about the gas range top?

Open Burner:
This type of cooktop has large openings for the burner - openings that are much larger than the burner itself. The cooktop lifts to allow cleaning underneath the cooking area.

Sealed Burner:
The sealed burners are attached directly to the cooktop. Spills and spatters are contained on the cooktop where they can easily be wiped up. The cooktop itself does not lift up because there is no need to clean beneath it.

Features

1. Cooking flexibility features:

Since most cooking is done on the cooktop, you probably want a cooktop that offers as much cooking flexibility as possible. On an electric cooktop you may want an element that can be adjusted to accommodate a large or small pan. Our triple Bridge Element feature allows you to use two 7-inch elements separately or with third element linking them together, creating a large 7 x 17-inch heated area. For a gas cooktop, you may want three different sizes of burners: large burners for high temperature cooking or for cooking large quantities of food, medium burners for all around cooking, and a small burner for delicate sauces or cooking a small amount of food.
2. Easy to clean features:
For most people, "easy to clean" means a self-cleaning oven to eliminate the most dreaded kitchen chore. It can also mean a smooth ceramic cooktop that eliminates drip pans and makes wiping up spills a cinch. For a gas cooktop, sealed burners make messes easy to clean, and removable drip pans can be lifted off for easy cleaning.
3. Performance features:
Models with GE's exclusive TrueTemp™ feature ensure the most accurate oven temperature in America. Fast response ribbon elements under the ceramic cooktop enhance performance on our electric models, and sealed maximum output burners and precise simmer burners improve performance on our gas models.
4. Dependability features:
Look for the following features that help make GE cooking products the most dependable ranges you can buy:
  • Heavy-duty oven racks to support the heaviest of turkeys
  • Counterbalanced oven doors that do not fall open or slam shut
  • Tough porcelain enamel surfaces to stand up to years of cooking and scrubbing
  • Smooth top ceramic cooktops with a warranty that lasts for years
