2. Can I continue to use my dishwashers?
We ask that you not use your dishwasher until it is repaired and disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it and inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire.
3. What should I do if I have a recalled dishwasher?
GE is proactively contacting as many customers as possible. In the meantime, if you have a recalled dishwasher, you should not use your dishwasher, disconnect power, and visit the GE Recall website www.geappliances.com/recall to get answers to your questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or call the Recall Hotline toll-free at 877-275-6840 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday for more information or to arrange for a free service call. Before you call, write down the model and serial number of your dishwasher. Information on the recall is also included on the Recall Information page at www.geappliances.com/recall.
4. Are any of these recalled dishwashers currently being made?
No. The GE Profile brand models were manufactured July 2003 through December 2005, and the GE Monogram units January 2004 through December 2006.
5. How many incidents is GE aware of? Have there been any injuries?
GE has been made aware of five instances of escaped fires, four of which caused damage to the kitchen counter-tops where the dishwashers were installed and one caused damage to adjacent cabinets and smoke damage to the home. No injuries have been reported.
6. How can I tell if my dishwasher is one of the affected models?
The serial number is important, as not all dishwashers with these model numbers are included. Look inside on the front left side of the dishwasher tub to find the model and serial number. View entire list of affected dishwasher model and serial numbers.
7. Can I receive a new dishwasher for free instead of the repair?
No. We will repair the dishwasher free-of-charge. If you have a recalled dishwasher, you will not be offered a new dishwasher free of charge. These dishwashers are between four and seven years old. If you wish to replace your dishwasher with a new model, you can use a GE rebate of $200 for the purchase of a new GE Profile dishwasher and a GE rebate of $400 for purchase of a new GE Monogram dishwasher. View details and rebate forms or visit our retailers.
8. Do I have to use the rebate?
No. You do not have to replace your dishwasher. You can have your dishwasher repaired for free if you choose. If you wish to replace your dishwasher with a new model, you can use a GE rebate of $200 for the purchase of a new GE Profile dishwasher and a GE rebate of $400 for purchase of a new GE Monogram dishwasher. View details and rebate forms or visit our retailers.
9. If I choose the repair, can I request a rebate for a new dishwasher as well?
No. You must choose EITHER the free repair OR replacement with the rebate. If you choose the free repair, you will no longer be eligible for the rebate on a new dishwasher, regardless of how much time has passed.
10. Did the CPSC force GE to issue a Recall?
No, this is a voluntary recall. We have worked closely with the CPSC throughout this process. Our effort here is to reach all consumers who may have the recalled dishwashers.
11. Are any of the dishwashers still being sold on retail floors?
The recalled dishwashers are four to seven years old. Very few will be found on the retail floor or in dealer inventory. If dealers still have any in inventory we have advised them not to sell the dishwashers and to contact GE.
12. How long is the Recall valid?
The recall is open indefinitely, and free repairs and the rebate will be offered as long as requested by consumers.
13. What if I have a service contract on my dishwasher?
All dishwashers included in the recall will be repaired at no charge regardless of a service contract.
14. Can you identify who owns the 174,000 dishwashers? How will those consumers be contacted?
We have contact information on the addresses of current owners for approximately 95,000 individual consumers as well as 5948 contract customers and 5869 retail customers. They will be sent letters or emails notifying them of the Recall Program.
15. I know someone with one of the recalled dishwashers and he/she hasn't received a letter yet. Why is that?
We're contacting consumers that we have records for stating that they purchased these dishwashers. We don't have contact info on every owner so please encourage the person you know to visit the GE Recall website http://geappliances.com/recall or call the Recall Hotline toll-free at 877-275-6840 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday to arrange for a free service call.
16. How much will this cost GE?
This recall will be free of charge to consumers. GE will assume all expenses for the recall.
17. What is the problem? Why are dishwashers being recalled?
GE has determined that water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.
18. What will GE do to repair my dishwasher?
GE service technicians have been trained to make the repair. Technicians will remove the outer door panel of the dishwasher and install a plastic shield and heat sensor. This provides protection and prevents any fire hazards.
19. Will I have to pay anything for the repair?
No. GE will repair the dishwashers at no charge to consumers.
20. How long will it take to have my washer repaired?
If your dishwasher is included in the recall, our goal is to respond within six working days.
21. Can I repair the dishwasher myself, or can I take it to a dealer for repair?
No. This repair involves changes to electrical wiring systems and should be made only by experienced repairers. In appliance repairs GE will repair the dishwasher free-of-charge through a GE authorized Service Technician.
22. Why can't I repair the dishwasher myself, or take it to a dealer for repair?
This repair involves changes to electrical wiring systems and should be made only by experienced repairers. Repairs must be made by a GE authorized Service Technician. GE will track all repaired units via the recall process. Units will be registered into a tracking system for use at future date.
