FAQs - GE Dishwasher Recall (1983–1989 models)
-
Why is GE conducting this recall?
In cooperation with the CPSC, GE is recalling certain GE and Hotpoint dishwashers manufactured between April 1983 and January 1989 because they present a risk of fire. The slide switch that allows consumers to heat dry or air dry their dishes can melt and ignite. GE is offering consumers a choice of a free rewire or a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher. The hazard is present only when the dishwasher door is closed and latched ready for use or in use. GE and the CPSC have received reports of approximately 90 incidents of fire, smoking and melted switches, 14 of which included fires that spread beyond the dishwasher. There have been no injuries.
-
Do I have options?
Yes, you can either have your dishwasher slide switch rewired free-of-charge or you can receive a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher. These dishwashers have already provided more than 10 years of service. The choice is yours.
-
What is the rewire option and how do I get it?
The rewire option disables the slide switch. If you choose to have your dishwasher re-wired by GE service personnel, you need to decide whether you want the energy-saver feature to remain permanently in the "Heated Dry" or "Air Dry" position. Once the slide switch is disabled, the energy-saver feature will remain permanently in the position you choose, and you will not be able to change it's setting. GE cannot and does not warrant the continued performance or operation of these dishwashers.
-
How do I request free rewiring?
GE will perform a free re-wiring of the switch of your recalled dishwasher. You can schedule the free service call by calling 1-800-599-2929 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
-
What is the rebate option, how do I get it?
GE will give you a rebate ranging from $75 to $125 on the purchase of a new GE dishwasher. The rebates vary depending upon the model purchased. GE will give a rebate of $25.00 and a one-year extended warranty for the purchase of a brand other than GE. If you wish to receive a rebate, we will send you a rebate package.
To qualify for the rebate, please return the completed rebate form with all information requested – including the model and serial number from the recalled dishwasher – as well as a copy of the receipt showing purchase of a new dishwasher.
-
Can I repair my dishwasher myself or have it repaired by non-GE service personnel?
Do not re-wire the dishwasher yourself. If you attempt to do so you may expose yourself to the risk of serious injury or death by electrocution. If you choose to hire a non-GE service technician to rewire the dishwasher, you will be responsible for the total cost.
-
Can I continue to use my dishwasher?
No. Do not use your dishwasher until it is rewired or replaced. You should immediately unlatch your dishwasher door, discontinue use and have it re-wired or replaced as soon as possible.
-
I do not have a sales receipt for my recalled dishwasher. What can I do?
You do not need a receipt for the old dishwasher to get the free rewire or a rebate. If you want a rebate for the purchase of a new dishwasher, the only receipt required is the one from the purchase of the new dishwasher.
-
Can I purchase a new Hotpoint model to replace my recalled dishwasher?
Yes. Hotpoint models are included in this program. If you choose the rebate option and wish to purchase a new Hotpoint dishwasher you will receive a $25 rebate and a one-year service contract taking effect after the conclusion of the standard new product warranty.
-
Do I have to pay for installation if I purchase a new dishwasher?
When you negotiate the purchase of the replacement dishwasher, the cost of installation should be discussed with the retailer to reach an overall price.
-
What if I have a service contract with GE?
If your recalled dishwasher is covered by a GE service contract, please call the 800 number on your service contract. You will receive a new dishwasher.
-
What if I have a service contract with someone other than GE?
GE still will give you a free rewire or a rebate if you wish. You may also choose to call the company with whom you have the contract to see if what your rights are under their contract. Even if it is not covered under the service contract, you may still participate in GE's recall program.
-
What if I have already replaced my dishwasher?
The purpose of this recall program is to remove a particular hazard from people's homes. During the original program GE and the CPSC asked consumers to replace their dishwashers. If you have already replaced your recalled dishwasher, you have already eliminated that hazard and addressed the safety issue. The CPSC asked us to add a free rewire option to the program to increase consumer participation, and we have agreed. GE continues to believe that given the age of these dishwashers - they have provided over 10 years of service - and the amount of the rebate, replacement of the dishwasher is the best choice for consumers. However, the choice is yours.
-
Did GE fully cooperate with the CPSC?
We have worked closely with the CPSC throughout this process. Our effort here is to reach those who the program may not have reached yet. We are cooperating with the CPSC by agreeing to a supplemental program that provides our customers with another option for eliminating the hazard associated with the recalled dishwashers. We are pleased with the outcome.
-
Was the original recall unsuccessful?
We are pleased with the response to the program. The original recall program eliminated the hazard from over 628,000 homes. The CPSC asked us to add this new consumer option and we agreed.
