• What model numbers are affected?

  The recalled Monogram professional dual fuel ranges include 36" and 48" Monogram Professional Ranges with a griddle, fueled either by liquid propane (LP) or natural gas. They were manufactured from October 1, 2005 through May 16, 2006. To find the model and serial number, look underneath the top ledge (also called the "bull nose"), above the range controls. The recalled ranges have the following model and serial numbers:

• Can I continue to use my recalled range?

  Until the repair is completed, you should stop using the main oven (large oven on 48" models). Please turn the oven control knob to "O" (off) and then remove the knob. Set it aside to make sure you do not use the oven accidentally. The oven mode selector switch should also be put into the OFF mode.

• What should I do if I have a recalled GE range?

  Call the GE Recall Hotline at (877) 546-0116 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern Time to arrange for a free service call. Before you call, write down the model and serial number of your range.

• When did GE stop manufacturing these defective ranges?

  GE changed the design of these of the ranges with this design flaw on May 16, 2006.

• Have there been any injuries? Any property damage?

  GE has received reports of one injury and two claims of property (smoke) damage.

• Didn't GE have a recall for these units in 2005?

  Yes. The recall in 2005 was for Pro Ranges manufactured from February 1, 2004 to October 1, 2005. This recall is for ranges manufactured after October 1, 2005, until May 16, 2006 that had a different design.

• What if I have a range from the 2005 recall?

  If you have a range from the 2005 recall and it was repaired, then you do NOT need to have anything else done on your range. That repair adequately resolves the problem. If you have a range included in the 2005 recall (manufactured from February 1, 2004 until October 1, 2005) and it has not been repaired, please call the GE Recall Hotline for the 2005 recall at (866) 696-7583 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern Time to arrange for a free service call.

  The 2005 recall covers models ZDP48N6RH1SS, ZDP48L6RH1SS, ZDP48N4GH1SS, ZDP48L4GH1SS, ZDP48N6DH1SS, ZDP48L6DH1SS, ZDP36N4DH1SS, and ZDP36L4DH1SS. The ranges in the 2005 recall have serial numbers starting with DG, FG, GG, HG, LG, MG, RG, SG, TG, VG, ZG, AH, DH, FH, GH, HH, LH, MH, RH, SH. To find the model and serial number, look underneath the top ledge (also called the "bull nose"), above the range controls.

• How many consumers had problems with their ranges before GE and CPSC decided a recall was in order?

  There were six incidents of gas leaks before GE voluntarily notified the CPSC of its intent to recall these units.

• In layman's terms, what is wrong with these recalled ranges?

  Insulation on a wire splice in the control area can be damaged. If that happens, and if the main oven control is turned on, the contacts can spark (or "arc") to the nearby griddle gas-supply tube, and burn a hole in the tube. If that happens, the gas can be ignited. There has been one injury reported and two incidents of property (smoke) damage, but we are taking the appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our consumers.

• Can I receive a new range instead of the service call?

  No. The CPSC has approved a repair procedure that completely eliminates the potential for this failure to occur. We will repair the range free of charge.

• How are GE service technicians repairing the recalled ranges?

  The repair procedure approved by the CPSC involves placing protective sleeves around the wire splice and the griddle gas tube.

• What if I have a service contract on my range?

  If you call the recall hotline number above, you will be provided a free repair regardless of service contract.

• Can I repair my range myself?

  GE recommends that only qualified appliance repair technicians repair these ranges. The repair involves working with wiring and gas tubes internal to the range, presenting the danger of electrocution and gas leaks if the repair is done improperly.

• Can I use my range before it is repaired?

  Yes, you may use the cook top only. Do not use the main oven (large oven on 48" models) until the repair is completed. Push the "OFF" oven selector switch and turn the oven thermostat control knob to "O" (off). To ensure that the oven is not used accidentally until the repair is complete, remove the thermostat control knob.

• Did the CPSC force GE to issue a recall?

  No, GE is voluntarily announcing this recall. We notified the CPSC of the issue.
