GE Zoneline Air Conditioner/Heat Units — June 2011 Recall
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the General Electric Company (GE) and Sharp Corporation (Sharp) have announced a recall of 91,000 GE Zoneline® packaged-terminal air conditioner and packaged-terminal heat (“PTAC”) units manufactured prior to April 2011.
To see if your PTAC unit is included in the recall, check the list of recalled models below for your model and serial number, or call the GE Recall Hotline. If you have a unit in the recall, you should not use the PTAC in the heating mode until after it has been repaired.
This voluntary recall is due to a risk of fire. In certain units, the electrical wiring to a component that regulates the PTACs heater can fail, posing a fire hazard.
GE has received a total of 4 reports of incidents involving smoke and/or fire. Two of the reported incidents involve property damage beyond the unit. No injuries have been reported. As part of our commitment to product quality and safety, GE has decided to voluntarily recall and repair these units free-of-charge to customers.
The model and serial numbers are important, as not all air conditioner/heat units are included in the recall. Look at the bottom front surface of your unit after removing the front cover to find the model and serial number.
This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which will also monitor the effectiveness of the recall program.
