Dishwasher - Soap Cup Did Not Open

Sometimes, the detergent cup is prevented from opening during the wash cycle due to one of the following:

  • Obstruction: dishes must be loaded so as not to block detergent cup from opening. Make sure pot handles and long-handled utensils are not touching detergent cup.
  • Detergent: it may be old, hard and cracked, preventing cup from opening. To remove caked detergent, carefully pry it out of cup with a blunt object, such as a wooden spoon. If using powdered detergent, it should be fresh, not lumpy.

If using tablets, make sure they are not binding the cup cover because they are not properly lined up in the opening.
  • Timer: May be out of position. On mechanical models, rotate timer all the way around and back to OFF. See if cup is open. If not, carefully try to manually open the cup by turning the cover counter-clockwise.

(Caution: DO NOT try this on electronic models.)

If neither method opens the cup, GE recommends service.

On some newer electronic models, the cup often can be opened by latching the door, touching the CLEAR/RESET button, wait until motor stops and hit CLEAR twice more. The window will count down 40 seconds and cup should open.
