Gas Range & Cooktop - Lighting Electric Ignition Burners During a Power Failure
In the case of a power outage, you can light the surface burners on your electric ignition gas cooktop or gas/dual fuel range using a match. Hold a lighted match next to the burner, then turn the knob to the low position. Use caution when lighting the burners this way.Normally, to light a gas burner you turn the burner knob to Lite and the spark igniter lights the gas. Then you turn the knob to the burner setting needed. During a power outage, gas can flow to the burner but the burner can’t make that spark to light it. You can still light the burner manually though. Hold a lighted match next to the burner and then turn the knob to the "Lo" position to light it.
If you’re already using a burner during a power outage, it will stay lit and will have gas flowing to it until you turn the knob to Off. If the burner is accidentally blown, it will have gas flowing to it. For safety, make sure the burner stays lit, or you turn the burner to Off. This also is true for a burner that is turned to Lite or a power setting but is not lit.
Keep in mind that the oven portion of the range will not operate during a power outage. The ignition system and gas valve require power to operate. If the oven is being used when the power outage occurs, the oven will turn off and will not return to cooking when the power comes on. You would need to set up the cooking mode, temperature, etc. again.
