Air Conditioners Odors

Based on extensive testing, the room air conditioner does not contain any mechanical parts that will produce an odor. There will be a newness type of odor when the air conditioner is first used. This is a plastic smell and should disappear after a few weeks of use.

After a period of time, water in the evaporator drain pan (condensate water) may cause a musty odor to form in the pan after prolonged usage of the air conditioner. This is simply due to the moist condition in the pan and represents nothing unusual.

Regular cleaning of the air conditioner can help reduce odors.

Models with electric heat: A slight burning odor may be noticed when the unit is first turned on at the beginning of the heating season. Dust on the surface of the heating element causes this odor. This odor will quickly fade.
