Refrigerator - Automatic Defrost System

The automatic defrost system featured on all full sized refrigerators made today saves you time and energy. It does this by eliminating the necessity to defrost the freezer or fresh food compartments manually. The refrigerator is designed and equipped to defrost itself automatically.

It accomplishes this by melting frost that accumulates on the evaporator during the normal refrigeration process.

  • During the automatic defrost cycle, heat rises up from the defrost heater to melt the ice on the evaporator coils for a programmed amount of time. No fans run during the defrost cycle.

  • The cycle runs according to a programmed amount of time. The automatic defrost cycle generally runs every 8 to 10 hours and it lasts for approximately 25 minutes. The defrost cycle may last longer on some models.

  • The defrost water drains down into the drain pan located underneath the refrigerator and the heat created by the compressor evaporates the water.

  • This process does not cause food to thaw.
