ADA COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLIANCES

ADA Requirements for Top-Freezer Refrigerators

To be considered ADA compliant, GE top-freezer refrigerators must meet the following requirements:

    • 100% of the fresh food space below 54 inches.
    • 50% of the freezer space below 54 inches.

Controls must:

    • Be below 54 inches.
    • Be operable with one hand and not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist.
    • Require force of less than 5 lbs to activate.

ADA Requirements for Side-by-Side Refrigerators

To be considered ADA compliant, GE side-by-side refrigerators must meet the following requirements.

Controls must:

    • Allow parallel approach by a person in a wheelchair with maximum high side reach of 54 inches for operation.
    • Be operable with one hand and not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist.
    • Require force of less than 5 lbs to activate.

ADA Requirements for Dishwashers

To be considered ADA compliant, a GE dishwasher must meet the following requirements:

    • Maximum high forward reach for controls and operating mechanisms is 48"; maximum low forward reach is 15".
    • Controls and operating mechanisms must be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no more than 5 lbs.
    • All rack space shall be accessible from the front of the machine for loading and unloading dishes.

ADA Requirements for Ranges

To be considered ADA compliant, a GE range must meet the following requirements:

    • Maximum high forward reach for controls and operating mechanisms is 48"; maximum low forward reach is 15".
    • Controls and operating mechanisms must be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no more than 5 lbs.
    • If ovens or cooktops have knee spaces underneath then they shall be insulated or otherwise protected on the exposed surfaces to prevent burns, abrasions, or electrical shock.
    • The location of controls for ranges and cooktops shall not require reaching across burners.

To be considered ADA compliant, a GE microwave must meet the following requirements:

  • Maximum high forward reach for controls and operating mechanisms is 48"; maximum low forward reach is 15".
  • Controls and operating mechanisms must be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no more than 5 lbs.

To be considered ADA compliant, a GE range hood must meet the following requirements:

Wall Switch Controls

    • Maximum high forward reach for controls and operating mechanisms is 48"; maximum low forward reach is 15".
    • Controls and operating mechanisms must be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no more than 5 lbs.
    • The location of controls for range hoods shall not require reaching across burners.

Wireless Controls

    • Controls and operating mechanisms must be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no more than 5 lbs.

ADA Requirements for Clothes Washers and Dryers

To be considered ADA compliant, a GE washer and GE dryer must meet the following requirements:

    • Maximum high forward reach for controls and operating mechanisms is 48"; maximum low forward reach is 15".
    • Washing machines and clothes dryers shall be front loading.
